Third Grade technology experts are working so diligently on their Google Slide Shows! After researching and taking notes in groups about Miwok topics, students wrote paragraphs about specific topics. They then created a Google Slide Show with this information and photos. These individual slide shows will be combined in one big presentation that will be shared with the class and each child will present their own portion. Students are also creating slide shows about a topic of interest. These two projects are the first pieces in their on-line writing portfolios.
Please check this blog regularly for important updates about third grade and Room 25.

Xtra Math and Ten Marks
Xtra Math and Ten Marks are two components of our math program. Xtra Math is an effective program to teach memorization of math facts. This week, all students were moved to the multiplication and division program. The memorization of these facts at the speed required while doing Xtra Math is necessary before 4th grade to complete higher level computation. All students will cycle through practice on this program a few times a week in school and we will assign it for homework, too. Ten Marks is a computer based program with a format that is very similar to the standardized test students will take in the spring. We have found this program to be most effective in reinforcing skills and helping students become familiar with the use of technology in a way that mirrors the test. Please remind your child to use the hints while doing challenging problems. Also, when needed, encourage them to use the scratch paper for computation. Thank you for your efforts from home to support your child with these programs.
Non Fiction Reading and Teaching Like an Expert
Third grade readers are busy reading non-fiction text. Lessons about non-fiction text include understanding and identifying non-fiction text features, main ideas and corresponding details using a boxes and bullets format for note-taking, learning how to teach like an expert and synthesize information from several texts. To teach like an expert, students practiced identifying the main idea and supporting details, using a teaching voice, gestures and pointing to illustrations and diagrams to reinforce teaching points.
Miwok Studies
One component of our Miwok studies includes activities with several Native Americans and learning about their tribes in addition to the Miwoks. Last week, Edward, Tory and Theo visited and taught the children about regalia, ceremonies, basket and other Miwok crafts. The students made rope out of grass.
